As founder and president of Profile America, Inc., I am proud of the work we do and am honored to be a long-time, trusted supplier to dozens of organizations – ranging from small startups to Fortune 100 companies. I started the company in 1984 under the name “Atlanta Research Group.” (In those early days, I was known as Patty P. Harris, but have since married and changed my name to Patty P. Lundy.)

It has been an interesting 20 years as an entrepreneur. I started the business on a shoestring, in the early EARLY days of personal computers, back when they were huge and word processing software was functionally limited and printer ink was black. In those early years, I was called an “information broker.” I worked primarily for advertising agencies preparing for new-business pitches; for marketing research companies planning to launch major studies; and for venture capitalists conducting due diligence.

Database searching via Lexis/Nexis and Dialog was a slow, rather laborious process. (The 28-baud Hays Modem was a wonderful tool, but OH SO SLOW by today’s standards!) Actual trips to the library were required to gather stats and facts about this industry or that -- since the only “output” from electronic libraries were bibliographic citations (journal name, issue date, article title, and page number – which cost up to $2.95 per article!). So I’d trek to the public library or the libraries of Atlanta’s universities with a list of bibliographic citations in hand and would spend an afternoon making photocopies. Then for the rest of the week, I would pore over articles, interview industry participants and analysts, and summarize my findings in a “situation analysis.”

Fast forward 20 years and most everything that was, is no longer. However, the one thing that has remained constant is the need for concisely written, informative reports on industries, markets and trends. Even in today’s content-rich, Internet-centric world, where information on virtually any topic is readily available, that information is typically sprinkled over a vast area, and the process of sorting and analyzing it and compiling reports is tedious.

We take the angst out of “building a brain” about an industry or a market. We could go an awful lot deeper and a whole lot broader in what we do – and sometimes we do -- but that is not what our customers want. They want it simple and they want it short, so that’s what we give them.
